Andrew Shepard always new he had a dark spot in his soul. He grew up loving ghost stories, horror movies, and police stories about the most grisly and disturbing crimes. Even though he was an heir to the Shepard Media conglomerate, he still chose to attend NYU and study journalism— not out of any familiar aspirations or desire for fame, but just because he wanted to know. He went looking for the seedy underbelly of life, and he found more than he expected. While investigating a series of brutal, ritualistic killings in SoHo, Andrew stumbled across an idol that seemed to be at the heart of the crimes— a true-life macguffin, right out of one of those pulp stories he read as a kid. The idol, however, was not as harmless as he first suspected— it was the imprisoned shadow demon Shrezz’nyk’ax— a malevolent entity whose mere presence had driven people to murder. The demon sensed the dark, macabre obsession in Andrew, and sought to possess him as a means of his escape. But time had been unkind to the demon, and he’d lost much of his power over the centuries. Instead of controlling Andrew, he found himself bound to Andrew’s soul, and thus mortal. Shrexx’nyk’ax reluctantly ended up giving control of some of his powers to Andrew, so that the mortal could protect himself long enough for Shrezz’nyk’ax to figure out a way to escape. Emboldened with his new powers, however, Andrew set out to right many of the lurid wrongs he encountered following his obsession. The presence of the demon in his mind gave him new fear, and new purpose.
